Residential buildings provide warm and cool indoor air and hot and cold tap water. To supply each individual part of the building, pipes and ducts run in floors and shafts, in walls and ceilings. On the way to their destination these pipes can lose energy and carry annoying operating noises into the building.

Making Transportation of Energy More Efficient.
Insulation is Key to Prevent Energy Losses
The world’s energy systems have undergone an unprecedented expansion in the last 25 years, with energy demand growing by 50% to fuel an economy that has doubled in size.Raising Energy Efficiency Standards to the Global Best. Page 3 However, energy efficiency has a huge potential that is increasingly being recognized. A reduction in fuel and energy bills, as well as, reduced air pollution and reduced greenhouse gas emissions no longer represent utopian scenarios.
For both economic and environmental reasons, it is vital to maximize the efficiency with which energy and materials are used in the construction industry. The opportunities of the building sector range from improved building design practices to more efficient heating and cooling and, most importantly, proper insulation solutions.
Whenever energy is generated, transported or stored, part of the valuable resource gets lost if the equipment is poorly insulated.Patrick Mathieu, President and CEO of Armacell
The Construction Industry Faces Great Opportunities for Tackling the Climate Challenges of the 21st Century

One of the most significant opportunities in this area consists in high-tech insulation products. Insulation is an effective way to improve energy efficiency in industrial, commercial and residential infrastructures.
Armacell’s high-tech insulation materials are designed for both new and existing installations. Be it flexible insulation foams for the insulation of mechanical equipment or light foams for the use in end-markets, Armacell can bring you solutions to tackle the climate challenges of the 21st century.
Seizing the Momentum For a Low Carbon Economy. Insulation is Key to Tackle Climate Challenges
Urbanization is progressing rapidly. Cities are growing at an unprecedented rate. By 2030, around 60% of the world population will live in cities.Accelerating Low-Carbon Development in the World’s Cities. Page 3 By 2050, the urban population is expected to reach two thirds of the entire global population.Accelerating Low-Carbon Development in the World’s Cities. Page 1 This imminent, fast-paced urbanization and the strong economic growth in developing nations will have a huge impact on the global construction industry.
While cities are epic engines of economic growth and social change, they are also key drivers of global energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Buildings consume 32% of global energy and produce 19% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. The construction industry produces 30–40% of global waste.Innovation. Making Buildings and Materials More Sustainable. Insulation for technical operating system components in cruise liners is subject to extremely strict requirements. High air humidity can easily clog up the systems and materials used. The IMO has declared that shipping “will make its fair and proportionate contribution” towards achieving global climate change mitigation goals.IMO Has Made Little Progress It has adopted two key approaches: the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). Both are expected to save an average of US$200 billion in fuel costs and 330 Mt CO2 annually by 2030 at marginal cost in the near term.IMO Has Made Little Progress
Armacell's Insulation Materials Contribute to the Energy Efficiency in the Oil & Gas Sector
The Armacell Engineered Systems division provides high performance acoustic and thermal insulation foams for oil and gas facilities. The multi-layer systems of Armaflex (LT/Armaflex Industrial, HT/Armaflex Industrial, HT/Armaflex Industrial IMO and Armaflex LTD), ArmaSound RD 240 and Arma-Chek R covering (or metal cladding option also available) reduce the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI) and provides exceptional noise reduction while minimising total system weight and thickness.
Building trust through innovation & testing
Industrial process applications work at high pressures, with gases and liquids moving at high temperatures and flow rates causing vibrations and often dangerous noise levels for operations personnel. Acoustic insulation and standards such as ISO 15665 have therefore been developed for process pipe work with two main objectives:
- to protect the safety of personnel working close by and
- to reduce noise pollution in the surrounding environment
Armacell’s Creates Specialized Component Foams for Aerospace Manufacturing
Our elastomeric foam components come in sheets, rolls or buns (blocks) for manufacturers serving the aerospace industry. Most foam materials can be cut or shaped to fulfill a variety of needs, including forming or bonding with other materials to create high-performance composites for specific applications. Armacell continuously works to improve testing standards so that we can always meet the changing needs of the aerospace industry.
Aviation is a major economic sector, central to global trade. Within the sector, the focus needs to be on improving fuel efficiency and shifting to cleaner fuels. International policies led by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) play a decisive role. Fuel efficiency can be improved through improved infrastructure, operational measures such as reducing the weight of on-board equipment, and improved aircraft design and materials.Raising Ambition to Reduce International Aviation and Maritime Emissions. Armaflex Insulation Material in the International Space Station (ISS)
Since the docking of the American research module "Destiny" in January 2001, Armaflex is also on board of the flying laboratory, which is about the size of a bus - the most advanced and diverse space research facility that has ever been built. (Image: NASA)
The Destiny module of the International Space Station (ISS) is equipped with water storage and tanks, connecting hoses, valves and water lines for this purpose. There is an acute lack of space and a lot of cooling water pipes have very tight turning radii. Therefore, many lines are made of flexible, braided stainless steel hoses. Most conventional insulating materials are far too rigid to withstand these extreme bends. (Image: NASA)
